Glasgow is lucky

Glasgow is lucky.

Not because we are the greatest town in America. We are.
Not because our weather is perfect. It is.
Not because we are the smartest people on Earth. We are.

We are lucky because we have great schools and very good people running them. I have a son at the high school and one at the middle school. The middle school staff I am not real familiar with but I like what I see so far.

The high school is run by Mrs. Bell. She looks like cheerleader and has the energy of a battery powered bunny. Her dedication is obvious and so are the results. Glasgow High School, in a time where schools are failing, is a thriving place.

Although Mrs. Bell is great she does not do it alone. Mr. Harris and others help. I am sure Kelly Bell would tell you - she couldn't do it without them.

For those of you who have never lived anywhere else, please do not not take them for granted.

Schools like Glasgow High are rare. In other towns, big and small, you don't walk into the office and get smiles and friendly help. You don't get a principal who knows which parent belongs to which student. You don't get vice principals who recognize you at Walmart and take the time to talk about your child. You don't get councilors who call you during the summer to let you know a better way your son's senior schedule could be arranged.

These are not normal things.

Glasgow High School for all it's greatness isn't any better than Highland.

Mrs. Oliver is as amazing as Mrs. Bell. Go to Highland and observe their morning assembly some time. It is something every school administrator should copy. Mrs. Oliver with her army of teachers combines enthusiasm with discipline and the children seem to thrive on it.

Just once you should hear how quiet a rambunctious school can become just by one woman holding up one finger. Mrs. Oliver and her staff are molding not only children but a city.

I don't mean to slight the middle school or Red Cross or South Green. I am sure their staff measures up to Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Oliver well. I am just not familiar with them.

If they do measure we should sleep well enough knowing Glasgow's children are in good hands and in turn Glasgow's future is bright.

I will be in Mccain's Cabinet

After hearing of John McCain's pick of Sarah Palin to be Vice president I was elated. As he listed her experience I was overjoyed. He specifically pointed out her time as PTA President as a reason he selected her.

I have never presided over a PTA but I was a Little league President.

I am hoping McCain recognizes my experience and offers me a cabinet post. Maybe Secretary of the Interior?

With my vast experience at running a twelve team Little league I should be ready to manage a Cabinet Department.

Can it really be that different?

Buckhead Cafe

I was on a HotTopix message board yesterday and read some out right lies about Buckhead Cafe. It's nice that a Bowling Green resident, Rick Kelley, spends a small fortune bringing a nice restaurant to Glasgow and some people feel the need to bash it and him and even his family.



If you feel the necessity to do such a thing at least step up and use your given name and provide a contact so the Kelley's can address your allegations. If you don't, then we will all take them for the lies I know they are. I don't know if the people doing it are competitors, former employees or just idiots. I take that back - the employee and competitor part I don't know - the idiot part I am certain.



I eat at the Buckhead Cafe in Glasgow regularly and it is very good. By the way I bet they use the same recipes, ingredients and procedures as the Bowling Green location. I eat there too and after a lifetime in the food business I know they are the same products.



In fact I ate lunch at the Glasow Buckhead Cafe yesterday and my hamburger was better than ever. I am not sure what they did but the charbroil flavor was the best I have tasted so far. I don't mean just at Buckhead I mean any where!



Well maybe not in my backyard but I am an unusually gifted chef.



I do realize that many get a joy out of tearing down people and I am sure the Kelleys know that. It's just that we are finally getting some good choices for eating and I would love to see even more restaurants come to Glasgow. A decision some restaurant owners may not make if they know that it will lead to their children being attacked on local message boards.



Think about that next time you make up lies about a good restaurant and a fine family.

Wednesday in Glasgow

A rainy morning here in Glasgow, KY. When the sun comes out my lawn will grow 6 inches. After a warm afternoon I will be spending tomorrow morning on the mower. I can fertilize, winterize and do all the lawn care I want but Mother Nature is still the best gardener I know.

FYI- Houchens has Pepsi products on sale. Buy 4 12 packs of any flavor and another $15 in groceries and you get a 12 pack free. It works out to five 12 packs for $11 or 18 cents a can.

To get my $15 I bought a whole pork loin for $1.89 a pound (just over 10 lbs). I had them slice half for chops and left half for a pork roast.

Pork loins done on the outside grill are very good but if you can't use a whole pork loin - I believe their price was $2.39 for half a loin. But I might be off a little on that so double check the ad before you buy.

Glasgow, KY the Land of Signs

Glasgow Kentucky is not lacking for signs. Every major intersection in town is over flowing with the latest auction, garage sale and concert notice. I don't even bother reading the Glasgow Times I just drive down to Happy Valley and 31E and read the signs.

Coke seems to be winning the sign war. The ones they have in front of Long John Silvers are much more readable than the auction signs in front of The Marathon.

While Coke is winning Pepsi is most certainly losing. The signs they have in front of Walmart are just plain bad. Did you happen to see the one when Dale Earnhardt Jr's Chevy National Guard car was there? The sign read Pepsi big and bold but the Dale Earnhardt Jr July 31 looked like it was written in crayon. Coca Cola must laugh every time they think of it.

I, for one, am in favor of businesses and organizations getting their word out but I do think it is making Glasgow look a little trashy. Maybe Coke and Pepsi or the city could get together and build an electronic Public Service marquee in front of Fort Williams or American Legion Park. Then when someone has a worthy announcement they get put on the marquee and we get a lot less signs in Glasgow.

Just an idea.

Glasgow Kentucky Walmart

Walmart has been at the new location for more than a year. Not long after they opened they changed the first register on the food side from an express lane to unlimited.

Don't you think it is about time they put a conveyor belt system there. I know they can afford the upgrade. I am tired of stacking groceries on the little refrigerator then handing them, one by one, to the cashier. Also you can't put anything frozen on the refrigerator or it will melt.

Sure I could go to another lane...IF THEY HAD ONE OPEN!!! I go in there and all they have is lane one, check yourself and express. I wouldn't mind checking myself if I got a discount for working. Why should I do the work and pay full price?

Mr Korte please for the love of Glasgow buy a conveyor!

Is it too much to ask?

If you don't want to or corporate won't let you - hire more cashiers and open more lanes.

As long as I am on the Walmart theme;

Why is it I go in there at 5:30 PM and there is no fried chicken available? I ask if they are making more and they always seem so surprised someone in Kentucky would want fried chicken at that time of day. So I always get the "it'll be about 45 minutes" I can buy a raw chicken and cook it myself in 45 minutes.

Walmart listen up.......have fried chicken available at Supper time and they will come. I promise you!

Back to school

Glasgow Independent Schools went back to session today.

I don't know why they wait so long?

Why not send the kids back on the 4th of July?

It is going to be 90 today. No one wants to sit in a school when it is that hot. Summer is for fun. Fall is for school.

Hot in Glasgow Kentucky

It's already hot today at 11:00 Am.

My lawn is getting long and the battery is dead on my mower.

So I have to go out there take it out, charge it, then put it back in and mow.

I don't want to!

Kids are back in school Thursday. Why so early? Because we all know how well kids learn in the Summer heat?

Give them and me a break and postpone school till Fall.

Glasgow Kentucky Weather

Last night it was 60 before the storm and this morning 16? I am not saying it was cold when I walked my dogs, but I did notice the neighbor's brass monkey was missing a couple of things.

I like warm weather.
I can tolerate cold weather.

I hate weather that goes up and down the thermometer like a bad comb over in a strong wind. Mother Nature needs to decide - global warming or ice age - just pick one!

It has been such an oscillating weather year that even my eleven year old watches Chris Allen's stupidity just to find out which coat to wear to school. If a boy as bright as he, sits through a series of lame puns and a grown man squealing about "little Friday", (The boy wants to know why he just doesn't say Thursday?) you know he must be perplexed by Glasgow's Winter weather in 2008.

people ask me why

In my frequent trips on the information highway I am often asked - why do you live in Glasgow, KY? The way it is phrased the question is kin to - why are you an idiot?

The answer is - I was duped.

Living most of my life outside the Bible Belt and square in a "blue state" I didn't know the right questions to ask before settling on my adopted community. I didn't realize prohibition had been repealed everywhere but Glasgow. I didn't realize there were still communities that banned such underground publications as Playboy and Penthouse. I didn't know I should of inquired if the town had an outlet that sells massage oils and the like.

I assumed and it was my mistake but it was also my luck. Glasgow is a fine town and the sins of wayward magazines and oily skin can be obtained just a few miles away in Horse Cave ( No, I didn't make that up! ) and by the grace of a town vote I will soon be able to, pour cold beer down my throat, while eating hot chicken wings in a local restaurant.

We still can't buy liquor, wine or beer retail but I own a car and Bowling Green needs my money too.

If you put aside those sinful indulgences you are left with a very nice town. It has top schools and believe it or not, shoes are required. I don't know of a single citizen that is married to his sister. We do smoke a lot compared to the rest of the country but that is our right as a tobacco state. I am thankful it is an option and restaurants have sections for the few of us that refrain from lung cancer.

So you see, I moved to Glasgow because I was ignorant of the city rules.

But to answer your question - I live in Glasgow because it has the most important thing I look for in a town.

Friendly people who don't ask rude questions.
