Dairy Queen
Is it only me or does anyone else think when you order a Blizzard at Dairy Queen they should fill it to the top?
Glasgow, Ky hot enough to fry eggs
It was hot enough to fry eggs on the pavement in Glasgow today. This is ironic because we don't have much pavement and not a single decent breakfast restaurant.
You know a town is short of good egg places when you have to drive to Cave City the home of the world's worst Cracker Barrel, to get even the resemblance of a restaurant style morning meal.
I wish a Denny's would come here and solve my cravings for a good omelet in the middle of the night.

Gondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza
Gondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza is our newest eatery. (Eatery? Pretty fancy talk, huh?)
Gondolier's is in the Fergies - Buckhead location. A location not exactly known for it's success. I think Gondolier's will change that fact. It's feature cuisine is Italian but they have a huge menu with many items not Italian including cheeseburgers and chicken wings.
They also have the biggest slices of cake in Glasgow.
I have visited Gondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza once. I ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce. Mostly because I wanted to gauge this restaurant based on an Italian dish. The meat sauce was good - not great. It was however more than worth the six dollar lunch price. I would order it again.
My wife ordered the pepperoni Stromboli. She loved it and has since ordered it to go for her dinner at work. It was over stuffed with pepperoni, peppers, onions and more than enough cheese. A definite must try item.
We also ordered chicken wings. We ordered the medium hot. Next time I will try a step hotter. They were good but the hot sauce didn't seem to stick to the chicken wings. The sauce that puddled on the platter was tasty but not much of it remained on the wings.
Maybe not drained after frying enough?
We received free bread sticks and they were worth the price but not much more. They weren't warm and and didn't taste fresh.
Keep in mind this was the second day they were open and when they get the opening glitches out I believe this will be one of Glasgow's best places to eat.
Look for my follow up visit.

Pizza Hut on 31E
I made my yearly visit to Pizza Hut. I know, I know, I should stay away but the new commercial pulled me in.
The new meat stuffed crust looked great on TV. Not so great in the restaurant. The crust was better than a non stuffed but the pizza itself left a lot to be desired.
First of all when I order a pizza I expect toppings besides cheese. When the server asked if I wanted the "meat" I assumed that meant the crust and the rest would have meat. I was wrong to assume. In fairness to Pizza Hut I should of asked.
In fairness to me, Pizza Hut should have it listed on the menu, on a table tent, written on the table, something besides a chalkboard near the door I never saw until I was leaving.
Besides the pizza I ordered wings - non breaded. I received breaded wings. My wife ordered sweet tea and received unsweetened tea. She sent the tea back, I ate the wings.
I believe the reason there were mistakes was - Pizza Hut had one server working the whole dining room at 12:25 on a Wednesday. How ridiculous is that?
My recommendation is to skip Pizza Hut and go to the new Italian restaurant in town Gondelier's Pizza.

Red Hats and rude manners
I recently was in a Bowling Green restaurant when my meal was rudely interrupted by other patrons about six tables away from me. Their loud rude behavior was something I would expect at McDonalds on a Friday night by teenagers with raging hormones. This was not McDonald's nor teenagers. It was a chapter of the Red Hat Society.
The Red Hats are a female club whose average age is some where in the neighborhood of 423 years. I suspect it's their ancient age which makes them believe it's okay to be so loud no other diner in the restaurant can have a conversation.
They already are easily spotted as attention wh@res as they walk in to an establishment wearing huge red hats and bright purple dresses. I guess after seeing these aged disruptors of dinner in their eye torture wear I shouldn't of been surprised they also were going to try to draw as much attention as possible by speaking in a voice loud enough to be used as a tornado warning siren.
At first I just though they all were deaf as doors but when the manager meekly mentioned other customers were complaining (not me...me and another guest were more in favor of tar and feathers) in not much more than a whisper and was immediately assaulted vocally with shrieking indignation that customers 17 tables away didn't need to know the names of their grandchildren's dog - Spencer if you are curious, it was apparent these obnoxious old bats could hear cake being cut four miles away.
It was at this moment that I asked for our check and left to seek a restaurant with less noise. Of course that left all options open including Chuck E. Cheese.
We settled on Toots. If you have been to Toots you now realize we don't expect to eat in The Cone of Silence. We just don't expect our ear drums to be shattered by the rude noise of women way too old to know better.
In fact I imagine these women were taught manners by Emily Post herself and she's been gone for fifty years!
In Summary; Toots wings ....still awesome! Toot's service very friendly. Try the fried pickles. First time customers get a sample for free.
Unnamed restaurant (because it wasn't their fault) great drinks.....if the Red Hat Society crows aren't perched in there next time we will review the food.
Suggestion; If you see wrinkled old bats in purple dresses and red hats steer clear or wear ear plugs. Real big ear plugs!

Chaney's Dairy Barn
On Saturday I finally followed the signs from Bowling Green to Chaney's Dairy Barn.
Chaney's is about 5 miles south of Exit 4 from the Natcher Parkway. Just follow 31W till you see a big red barn on the right with batting cages next to it.
Chaney's at first glance reminded me of the home dairy's though out New England who sell home made ice cream. I was surprised there wasn't a walk up window or 12 like you will find at many New England dairies like Kimballs in Carlisle , MA.
I walked inside and found a line about 10 deep. I don't know if this is normal because it looked like a girls softball team was there.
The service was fast but I wouldn't say friendly. The kids working the counter were robotic and didn't speak unless absolutely necessary.
My wife ordered a waffle cone with two scoops of mint chocolate chip. The scoops were large and the cone was freshly made.
I ordered a sundae with mint chocolate chip and hot fudge. I also agreed to whip cream when asked.
Important;
If you ever go to Chaney's Dairy Barn, do NOT order the sundae. In my opinion there was not enough hot fudge to make it worth the price and the whipped cream was warm and runny.
There was not a teaspoon of fudge on my sundae, so if I were you, I would order a waffle cone or a cup of ice cream at Chaney's.
Chaney's also has a menu of sandwiches but we didn't test any of them. There is also a small over priced gift store featuring Kentucky Proud items.
I would be a lot more PROUD if every time I saw one of those labels it wasn't for twice the price.
Summary;
Without expectations it was fine and worth the drive IF you are in Bowling Green.

Cheddar's Casual Cafe
Cheddar's Casual Cafe.
I hadn't mentioned my favorite restaurant in awhile and I didn't want you to think there was a bad reason.
Cheddars is still as good as I first found them. If you haven't made the trip down Campbell Lane to the corner of Nashville Road - what are you waiting for?
Their prices are cheap. Portions are huge. Staff is friendly - especially the female manager who is usually at the door and her hosts and hostesses.
The decor is as nice as any restaurant charging three times their prices.
So get off your computer and treat yourself to a great meal tonight!

Glasgow needs doughnuts
Glasgow needs doughnuts!
Walmart donuts are not cutting it. They are usually stale and there is more icing on the plastic than on the pastry. Yes, I know I can get the ones out of the case but those are just as bad and cost twice as much. If I am going to buy a bad doughnut I am not going to pay 65 cents for it.
we also have Sweetheart bakery. They don't count for much because they are not open Sundays. I am all for observing the Sabbath but if you are a doughnut shop you can not have that luxury.
So what are we to do?
You should do what I do and drive to Bowling Green for great doughnuts. I go to a place called Great American Donuts. They are located on 31W. If you take Exit 26 - turn right - then turn right on 31W and you will see the sign in a couple of blocks on your right. If you see Taco Bell, you have gone too far.
Great American American Donuts or GADs as i am told the students of WKU call them are worth the drive. The doughnuts are made fresh right there in the shop. The people are friendly. The assortment is everything you would want in doughnuts.
Do yourself a favor next time you are in Bowling Green and pick up a dozen or more!

Bowling Green Hot Rods
We went to see a Bowling Green Hot Rod game last night.
It was a good time except for them losing. They gave up three runs in the top of the first and it turned out to be the difference.
Our seats were right behind home plate in row J, which I believe is ten rows from the field.
The seats were ten bucks each. About one tenth of what we would of paid at a major league park.
It was our first time at a Hot Rods game and I was surprised by the concession prices. Pleasantly surprised.
A jumbo hot dog was $3.25. Same for a quart of lemonade. Chips were two bucks. Dipping Dots 3.50 for a small and $5 for a large. All prices comparable to any food court in any mall in this part of the country.
It was Thursday night and that entitled us to drinks for two dollars a piece but we opted for the Souvenir Cups that were much larger for regular price.
All in all it was a fun night out for a reasonable price.
FYI- on certain dates you can order four tickets online for $47 and get four hot dogs, four drinks and four bags of chips included in the price of the seats.
Plus no goofy miniature dogs or drinks to make it work either.

Domino's Pizza
Tonight it was Domino's Pizza.
As we all know our local Domino's is on Cherry across from McDonald's - way too convenient.
I called for a couple of pizzas for pickup.
They answered the phone and quizzed me like a lost boy;
Pickup or delivery? Pickup.
Your phone number? I told them.
Your address? I told them.
Your name? I told them.
Apparently they were satisfied at this point and I was cleared to order pizza.
I asked them if they still had the special of large carryout pizzas with two toppings for $5.99. After checking I was told they did if I got carryout. I said that is what I want. I thought that was already clear during the initial interrogation.
I ordered one with pepperoni and Italian sausage and one with bacon and beef. She said they would be ready in 15 to 25 minutes and the total was $12 something....I think .70
I left the house in 15 minutes and arrived about twenty minutes after the phone call. I proudly told them my name after again being asked. They said it would be a few minutes. It was ten. Five of the minutes my pizzas were sitting on a shelf cooling.
I paid because I was not allowed to pay until the pizzas were done. Odd rule I think.
I took my pizzas home. They both were very good. Would of been better 5 minutes sooner but still excellent pizza.
Sausage had a little spice to it and I like that and apparently so did my sons because more of it went first then the bacon and and beef.
All in all a good dinner.
Side note; while waiting one of the Dominio's workers answered the phone and when obviously being asked the specials she only mentioned the mediums for 5.99 and not the larges.
So be sure to specify the large special. It's still posted on their website.

Big Moose's
When is Big Moose's going to have hours that meet my needs.
their food is great. The pork shoulder is too good not to order every time. The Indian stew has just enough spice to make me happy. The hours are terrible.
It's not just that their short on some days but I have a terrible time remembering what they are so we usually don't bother going down Main and we just stop some where on the ByPass.
It's too bad because Big Moose's is by far the best restaurant in Glasgow for lunch style meals.

Maybe I am wrong, but if there was anywhere else besides the smoke filled little restaurant across from Gorin Park, the Glasgow dairy queen might actually care.
They might actually fill the Blizzards to the top. They might actually blend the Blizzards enough to mix the flavor with the ice cream. The might actually make a cone that doesn't look like a building after an 8.0 earthquake.

Lacking Posts
I have been neglecting my restaurant reviews so don't get confused when I try to catch up. It's not that I am eating 12 times a day ( or am I ? ). It's just that I need to update my forgotten blog.
Wendy's of Glasgow Kentucky
Tonight my son and I had dinner at Wendy's. We really wanted Tacos but didn't feel like a anything longer than fast food and last time we were at Taco Bell the employees were eating the hamburger while making tacos and it seemed a little gross.
I ordered a double with cheese and a side of chili, medium diet coke. My son had a double Baconator with cheese, chili and root beer.
The meal was perfect. Burgers, hot , juicy and looked like the commercials. Chili was - as always at Wendy's - the best chili in fast food land. The drinks were iced properly and filled fully.
Couldn't been happier with the food.

New restaurant in Buckhead spot
My grapevine has informed me, Fergie's from E-Town is expanding to Glasgow. They will be occupying the spot on 31E where Buckhead was located - near the Houchen's and Pizza Hut.
They are a little higher priced then most, maybe all, Glasgow restaurants but they run a lot of appetizer and drink specials during basketball and football games.
Let's wish them well and frequent them when we can. If we don't it's back to the fast food or driving to Bowling green for a night out.

Cheddars in Bowling Green
It's not in Glasgow but a new restaurant is coming to our area.
At the corner of Nashville Road and Campbellville Lane in Bowling Green they have built a Cheddars Restaurant. If you are not familiar with Cheddars it has a little bit of everything. Ribs, steaks, sandwiches....etc. No breakfast.
It does have a full service bar.
It also has great prices. A Chicken Fried steak for $6.99!
Half a rack of ribs $9.99!
A sir loin steak $9.99!
It also has huge hamburgers and several sandwiches and salads.
They are hiring now and will be opening in a few weeks.

Dominoes Pizza Sunday night
Dominoes Pizza was having a nightmare last night. It was unbelievably busy. They were running out of ingredients. They were short staffed.
We ordered three pizzas, two sandwiches and wings. When we got there they weren't ready. We were greeted politely and they apologized. No big deal. It's pizza, not exactly a life and death situation. While we were waiting two employees and the manager were working as fast and as hard as they possibly could. When we first arrived it was four employees but two quit while we were waiting.
I don't care the circumstances, that was a pretty crappy thing to do to your fellow employees.
We waited a few minutes - not a real long time. While we were there a customer came in, identifying himself as "De Haas". He, just as we were, was greeted and apologized to, he was told it would be another ten minutes for his pizza.
You would of thought by his reaction he was told his pants were on fire. He took his pizza being late as a travesty. He proceeded to tell off the manager (the mgr never took the bait and just kept being polite). He also stated he was "a retail manager". I guess in his mind that made him an expert on pizza cooking.
I really wish I would of asked him what "retail" he manages so I could encourage everyone to boycott where such a rude person works. Also he used the word "dude" and I have a strict policy against giving business to any establishment where adults use the word "dude". If anyone knows where "De Haas' works please write and let me know.
The only good thing about the De Haas episode was when he said he was going to go to Pizza Hut. I have been to Pizza Hut. De Haas and they deserve each other!
I do want to mention, if late pizza is a real big deal in your life, you have a pretty good life. People all over our country and our planet, are worried about eating anything and people are throwing fits over late pizza?
They should be ashamed!
We ordered three pizzas, two sandwiches and wings. When we got there they weren't ready. We were greeted politely and they apologized. No big deal. It's pizza, not exactly a life and death situation. While we were waiting two employees and the manager were working as fast and as hard as they possibly could. When we first arrived it was four employees but two quit while we were waiting.
I don't care the circumstances, that was a pretty crappy thing to do to your fellow employees.

Outback Steakhouse Valentine's day
The Outback in Bowling Green on Valentine's Day was great. Prime rib cooked perfectly. The loaded baked potatoes very good. Dessert was great - we had the sampler.
It was very busy. There was a 90 minute wait. Lucky for us we did the call ahead seating and only had to wait a few minutes after we arrived.
The call ahead is perfect for the citizens of Glasgow. When you leave the house, call the Outback and when you get there your table will be ready. Perfect!
