Gondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza
Gondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza is our newest eatery. (Eatery? Pretty fancy talk, huh?)
Gondolier's is in the Fergies - Buckhead location. A location not exactly known for it's success. I think Gondolier's will change that fact. It's feature cuisine is Italian but they have a huge menu with many items not Italian including cheeseburgers and chicken wings.
They also have the biggest slices of cake in Glasgow.
I have visited Gondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza once. I ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce. Mostly because I wanted to gauge this restaurant based on an Italian dish. The meat sauce was good - not great. It was however more than worth the six dollar lunch price. I would order it again.
My wife ordered the pepperoni Stromboli. She loved it and has since ordered it to go for her dinner at work. It was over stuffed with pepperoni, peppers, onions and more than enough cheese. A definite must try item.
We also ordered chicken wings. We ordered the medium hot. Next time I will try a step hotter. They were good but the hot sauce didn't seem to stick to the chicken wings. The sauce that puddled on the platter was tasty but not much of it remained on the wings.
Maybe not drained after frying enough?
We received free bread sticks and they were worth the price but not much more. They weren't warm and and didn't taste fresh.
Keep in mind this was the second day they were open and when they get the opening glitches out I believe this will be one of Glasgow's best places to eat.
Look for my follow up visit.

Pizza Hut on 31E
I made my yearly visit to Pizza Hut. I know, I know, I should stay away but the new commercial pulled me in.
The new meat stuffed crust looked great on TV. Not so great in the restaurant. The crust was better than a non stuffed but the pizza itself left a lot to be desired.
First of all when I order a pizza I expect toppings besides cheese. When the server asked if I wanted the "meat" I assumed that meant the crust and the rest would have meat. I was wrong to assume. In fairness to Pizza Hut I should of asked.
In fairness to me, Pizza Hut should have it listed on the menu, on a table tent, written on the table, something besides a chalkboard near the door I never saw until I was leaving.
Besides the pizza I ordered wings - non breaded. I received breaded wings. My wife ordered sweet tea and received unsweetened tea. She sent the tea back, I ate the wings.
I believe the reason there were mistakes was - Pizza Hut had one server working the whole dining room at 12:25 on a Wednesday. How ridiculous is that?
My recommendation is to skip Pizza Hut and go to the new Italian restaurant in town Gondelier's Pizza.
You can bet your stuffed pizza I will next time.

Restaurants In Glasgow Barren County are open
I called Glasgow Water and they told me Glasgow Kentucky restaurants can be open today. There was confusion on some of the announcements because of a problem the Cave City area is having with water. I believe the Cave City restaurants were asked to be closed so before you venture towards Cracker Barrel you may want to call first.

Second Day No School
It's the second straight day Glasgow Independent has cancelled school. I think again it was right to be on the side of safe instead of sorry.
All the reports predicted terrible driving conditions when the morning buses would of been delivering kids. The storm was late and it may have looked bad, to cancel school, but with icy power lines and some people without power and phone, I think it was the right decision no matter when the snow came.
My only problem was the reports never changed, so please next time pull the trigger a little earlier. It's not a big deal for me but some people probably had to scramble to find sitters while they were preparing for a wet, icy drive to work.
If you cancel school and the weather turns decent we can live with that. If you don't cancel school or someone gets the word too late and there is accidents - some people may not be able to live with that.

The school grew silent
I have recently learned that Mr. Mudd's, one of Glasgow High's fine band instructors, job was cut. I know in these tough economic conditions hard choices have to be made but Glasgow High's band is a very bright spot.
The band finished the year sixth in the state in their division. I believe that is better than the football team. Corey Bond's is a great young band instructor but he needs some help. I think if we could find a way to keep good people, like Mr. Mudd, supporting Mr. Bonds, Glasgow High could compete for a State Championship as soon as next year.
Surely, somewhere, we can shake lose enough money for Mr. Mudd to remain involved. If it meant a state football or basketball championship we would find it.

Ice Ice baby
I woke up this morning to find my trees covered in ice. The branches were sagging and a few twigs were broke but no major damage. At least the roads weren't frozen. I was out and about before six am and the roads were wet but not icy.
The city did a great job in pretreating Glasgow.
The power near McDonalds was out including the traffic light at Happy Valley and 31E. By the time I was back out at nine am the light was working and it appeared power was restored to McDonalds, Long Johns, Dominoes and Arby's. Thank goodness we can still get fast food!
Glasgow and Barren County Schools were cancelled and I think that was a good call. With all the frozen power lines and frozen trees I think a better safe than sorry attitude was prudent.

McDonalds Sunday Morning Good Food Bad Service
We had breakfast at the Glasgow, KY McDonalds.
Great food - terrible service!
Sausage McMuffin was perfect.
Egg McMuffins perfect.
Hash browns could have been a little hotter but not bad.
Hot chocolate very good.
Coffee not worth the trouble.
Is it so odd that I like my coffee black with no sweetener? Apparently Vicki the counter person thinks so. She made mine with sugar and when I pointed out I didn't want sugar she rolled her eyes and gave me a look like I was nuts. Which I am but that is beside the point.
She had already lost points by stopping us in mid order to bark out, "here or to go". Then the old, "is that all?" when she thought we were done ordering.
Also I want to mention, in case in McDonald's people read this, "Hello" is a greeting. "Can I help someone" is not a greeting. Vicki also did not ask for repeat business or thank us for Sunday's business. If I was a mystery shopper she would of failed miserably.
To recap; food was worth the visit. Avoid Vicki's line when visiting Glasgow McDonalds.

Tired of the weather
Is anyone else tired of the weather? Cold - hot - cold - hot.....pick one! I live in Kentucky because of the mild winters and hot summers - I just don't want them all in one week! One day it is almost 60 and the next day it is 10....stop it Mother Nature!!!
The one I really enjoyed was the 77 degree day followed two days later by the 16 degree morning...real funny!
It has gotten so bad I have had to watch that pun happy weatherman, Chris Allen, to find out which coat to wear. You have got to realize how bad I think it is when I watch him!
Chris, for the last time, Thursday is Thursday not "little Friday" so quit with the pig squeals. It's not funny. I will wear a parka in July before I listen to that nonsense again!
Okay so now you realize inconsistent weather makes me mean.
Sorry I will be better when Spring comes.

Buckhead Cafe Glasgow
Last night The Buckhead Cafe in Glasgow did a fund raiser for Highland Elementary School so we used it as an excuse to eat there.
We had three burgers, two Hickory Burgers and a Cheeseburger - Cheeseburger. Two with killer chips and one with killer fries. When you order "killer' they come with melted cheese over them. The chips are "kettle"style and very good. I would encourage you to order these instead of the fries. Not because the fries aren't good but because the kettle chips are great.
The burgers were cooked perfectly. The service, even though they were very busy, was fast and efficient. The Buckhead, I think, gets forgotten a little because of it being away from the other restaurants but it is worth remembering. The food is consistently good and the self serve style makes it fast.
I wish they would put more dinner items on the menu. The Buckhead Cafe has a large menu but most of the items I think of as lunch, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, home made soups, etc.....
The Buckhead does serve a very good lasagna and a chicken dish with mushrooms, so there are a few "dinner items" but I think a couple of more wouldn't hurt. In fact, in my humble opinion, if they had a small ribeye or sirloin steak on the menu (or both) Colton's would have some competition.
Taste the hickory burger at Buckhead then imagine what a rib eye would taste like coming off of their grill with cheese covered kettle chips and a slice of garlic bread. Order me an ice tea and I am a happy person.
If you haven't been to the Buckhead Cafe in Glasgow, or it's been awhile, you need to go.
Remember, if you bring your church bulletin, you receive a ten percent discount. So for all of you who like to talk about how liquor is ruining our town, put you money where your mouth is and support a smoke free, alcohol free, restaurant that rewards church goers.
If you don't, you have no one to blame but yourself when our only choices are bars that serve food.

Gas prices
Why when oil goes up on the commodities market does gas go up immediately but when oil goes down gas stays the same or lowers slowly?
I don't know if you pay attention to the price of oil, but right now, it is at it's lowest point in years. So why isn't gasoline? If you look around Glasgow you will find most of the stations in the $1.70s. certainly not as bad as it was a few months ago, but not as low as it was a few weeks ago, when oil was selling at $60 a barrel. Oil, as I write this, is selling for $34 a barrel. In fact today is the sixth straight day the average price of gasoline has risen in the U.S. While oil has become cheaper in the same period.
I am no expert but it seems the gas stations are gouging us a little in hopes we don't notice because gasoline is relatively cheap.
The only way to break them of this habit is to always buy where it is the cheapest price.

I heard last night Glasgow High School swept the awards in their class at the Caverna High School Band competition. They were also fourth overall.

Dale Earnhardt Jr - Number 88 Visits Glasgow KY
In case you missed Pepsi's lame sign - Dale Earnhardt Jr's National Guard car came to Glasgow July 31. It was parked outside the Walmart for about 6 hours. They even took free pictures. You had to go on the web to see them but it was still nice. Also if you are like me - with sons - you had to fight off the National Guard Recruiter. Remember if you get in a tight spot with a recruiter they are all afraid of Moms.
I have been to several NASCAR races but I still like checking out the cars. Last year Walmart had Petty Enterprises' 43 out front. Not as cool as Dale Jr but the 43 has it's storied history too. When we saw the 43 Cheerios gave out little Hot Wheels style replicas. Even better than a picture.

Longhunters Square
Longhunters Square across from WalMart has a new store. In addition to The Dollar Tree, Longhunters now has Aarons. It is a furniture "rent to own" similar to Colorama and Rent a Center. If you are a NASCAR fan it is familiar from the commercials with the Waltrips.
Also the Marquee Cinemas now has to be entered through the parking lot of Longhunters Square.
I am hoping for an Applebees in the square or at least a Baskin Robbins.

Buckhead Cafe Ribbon Cutting Glasgow, KY
On July 9, the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting for Buckhead Café.
Buckhead Café provides a varied menu of quality food typically found in a casual dining restaurant but at a much faster service level.
Buckhead Café offers dine-in, drive-thru and curbside service. The restaurant is open seven days a week, 10:30am to 9:00pm. Visit Buckhead Café at 509 S. L Rogers Wells Blvd or contact them at 270-629-2233.
